On October 22, 2009, School's Out Washington celebrates their 10th annual Lights On Afterschool event, which is a nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. This event helps to raise awareness about the importance of afterschool programs and the resources required to keep the lights on and the doors open during out-of-school time.  Last year, more than 50 events and celebrations took place throughout Washington State and an estimated 1 million people participated in Lights On Afterschool gatherings nationwide.

School's Out Washington invites you to organize an event in your community and help them reach their goal of 100 Lights On Afterschool events in Washington State in 2009! The Afterschool Alliance’s website provides a wealth of information and resources to assist you in planning your own event.

If you are planning a Lights On Afterschool event, be sure to register it online with the Afterschool Alliance so that your event will be included on their website listings. This will help people find out about your event and where and when it's happening.

Nominate a champion in your community who makes a difference in the afterschool field to be recognized at the statewide Lights On Afterschool event. The exact location and time for the statewide signature event in 2009 has yet to be determined, check back for more details.
