Communities In Schools of Kent
Communities in Schools of Kent is a non-profit organization partnering with the Kent School District to coordinate mentoring programs at six local elementary schools and one local high school – the Kent Performance Learning Center. The Kent Performance Learning Center, located at the Kent Phoenix Academy, is a small, non-traditional high school designed for students not succeeding in the traditional high school setting and in need of a different learning environment. The Kent Performance Learning Center is designed to keep students in school and prepare for life beyond high school – college and careers are the standards for success for all Kent Performance Learning Center graduates!
Communities in Schools of Kent is seeking supportive, energetic, and committed adult volunteers to serve as one-on-one or small group mentors to elementary and high school students. Interested mentors are matched with a student and meet together for one hour each week during the school day and at the school the student attends. During this time, mentors and students can do a variety of activities together including eating lunch, playing a game, or making future goals plans. The most important part of this time together is developing a meaningful connection, and providing encouragement for school and future life plans.
If you are interested in learning more about how you can make a difference in a student’s life by being a mentor with Communities In Schools of Kent, please contact Ginger Colamussi, Services Coordinator, at 253-373-6939, or gcolamussi@ciskent.org .

Chris was matched with his Big Brother, Will, in July 2010. Chris was 12 and Will was 20. Chris lives with his grandmother who reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters because she thought a positive, male role model would be beneficial for Chris. Chris and Will meet almost every week and talk in between meetings. When they are together they are very active.
